What is Wi-Fi 6?

What is Wi-Fi 6?

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) wireless Wifi 6 (802.11ax) is the successor to the IEEE Wifi 5 (802.11ac) standard. Wifi 6 addresses the increasing number of devices on each network. Wifi operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and features improvements in throughput, multiple device support, and Wifi spectrum efficiency.

Wifi will still do the same basic thing – connect you to the internet – only with a bunch of additional technologies to make it happen more efficiently, speeding up the connection in the process.

With the existence of WIfi 6, it will bring changes to various sectors, one of which is various businesses that rely heavily on information technology. Of course, using this Wifi advancement will force them to upgrade their previous Wifi to a more advanced one like Wifi 6.

How Fast is WiFi 6?

Maybe many think that this latest Wifi will increase their internet speed. However, this assumption is not 100% true. Instead of increasing the speed for individual devices, Wifi is all about boosting the network when multiple devices are connected.

That's an important goal, Wifi comes at a crucial time: when Wifi 5 came out, the average household in various countries had about five Wifi devices on it. Today, the average home has nine Wi-Fi devices, and companies estimate that multiple Wi-Fi devices will result in wasteful buying of hardware and network maintenance.

These added devices have an impact on your network. Your router can only communicate with so many devices at once, so the more gadgets that rely on Wifi, the more the network will slow down overall.

Wifi 6 introduces several new technologies to help mitigate the problems that come with putting dozens of Wifi devices on a single network.

This allows the router to communicate with more devices at once, allows the router to send data to multiple devices in the same broadcast, and allows Wifi devices to schedule check-ins with the router. Simultaneously, these features should keep the connection strong even as more and more devices start to demand data.

What is the difference between WiFi 5 (802.11 AC) and WiFi 6 (802.11 AX)?

There are many differences that underlie Wifi 5 and Wifi 6 including:

Increased efficiency and capacity

Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA). This feature allows your router and devices to use your bandwidth more efficiently by reducing the time between data transmissions. As a result, more bandwidth is available to other devices.

High bandwidth traffic efficiency with 8-stream Multi-User-Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO). This technology allows your router to communicate with multiple devices at the same time. Wifi 6 also allows 8×8 APs to use eight lanes to transmit information.

Speed ??boost

Improved data rate and signal encoding. Wifi allows devices to send more data in a single transmission, resulting in a speed increase of up to 20%.

Improvements through high-level modulation (1024-QAM). Higher order modulation increases the efficiency and speed of data transmission on your network. This technology can provide a speed increase of up to 25%.

Together, these two features provide a connection speed increase of up to 40%.

Increased reach

The dedicated 20MHz device and OFDMA's ability to use smaller subcarriers mean it can cover longer distances.

Future improvements

Further improvements via MU-MIMO uplink. The MU-MIMO uplink allows more of your devices to transmit data to your AP, increasing network efficiency.

Better neighborhood, urban, and citywide wifi through spatial reuse (BSS color). BSS staining allows devices operating within the Wifi standard to distinguish between signals from their own network and signals from other networks. This feature increases the efficiency and capacity of your network.

Extended battery for mobile and smart home devices with Target Wake Time (TWT). TWT makes communication between your device and your router's Wifi line more efficient. TWT-enabled devices enter a sleep state until their scheduled wake-up time. TWT reduces energy consumption and bandwidth usage.

6 GHz spectrum. Future developments in the 6 GHz band mean more unlicensed bands are available for high bandwidth applications.

Advantages of WiFi 6

What are the advantages of using Wifi 6? There are various things that can be obtained if you use Wifi 6, including:

1. Wider Wifi coverage and the number of users that can be more than Wifi 5

2. Stable speed and even faster than Wifi 5, reaching 9.6 Gbps

3. More efficient in terms of cost. There is no need to use a router a lot because it has a wider range and also the number of users that can be more.

Benefits of Using Wifi 6

Wifi-enabled devices have just started pouring out. You can already buy a Wi-Fi 6 router, but so far, it's an expensive high-end device. Some laptops also include the new generation of Wifi, but it is not yet widespread.

Wifi 6 will start coming to high-end phones this year. Qualcomm's latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 855, includes support for Wi-Fi 6, and it's aimed at the next wave of top-of-the-line phones. The inclusion of the Snapdragon 855 doesn't guarantee that the phone will have Wifi, but it's a good sign: The Samsung Galaxy S10 was one of the first phones with the new processor, and it supports the latest generation of Wifi.

The inclusion of Wifi is likely to become more common next year. The Wifi Alliance will launch the Wifi 6 certification program this fall, which ensures compatibility across Wifi devices. The device doesn't need to pass that certification, but its launch will signal that the industry is ready for the arrival of Wifi 6.

It can be said that the benefits of Wifi 6 are many. One of the most obvious is its efficiency. Because by using this Wifi technology, you can access the internet faster. For those of you who own a company, it is also easier to maintain your network because of its wide range and also minimizes buying many routers.

Now also Wifi is present in various smartphones that have just come out, so there is no longer any reason to use Wifi 6.
